Mark last year’s IA before this year’s

A ten-minute calibration before IA season starts.

Before your class hands in a single draft, try this with an IA from last year.

Pick one where you already know the moderated mark. Run it through Mark my IA, then compare three things:

  1. The marks. Where does it land against the IB’s moderated mark, criterion by criterion? It’s strict on purpose, so expect it at or just under.
  2. The feedback. Would its questions have moved that student up a band?
  3. The gaps. What did it spot that you didn’t, and what did you spot that it missed?

In ten minutes you’ll know how far to trust it before your students use it, and where your own marking drifts.

Then, when this year’s drafts arrive, students can get feedback before the one draft you’re allowed to comment on. They resubmit and see whether they actually acted on it. By the time the draft reaches you, the obvious fixes are done, and your comments go where only you can help.

Your first one is free, with no commitment. Start with last year’s.

Try it on last year’s IA

PS Take the student’s name out first. The marker is told never to repeat a name on its sheet, but the file still goes off to be marked, so it’s a good habit.
