IB Biology B4.2 Pub Quiz: Ecological niches
B4.2 as a pub quiz for your class: review rounds on this subtopic, mixed with pure-fun rounds so it feels like a night out and not another test. Opens at SL; switch to HL in the builder to add the higher level cards.
Teacher pages are the quizmaster script and tally sheet. Student pages are the team answer sheet, handout and picture sheet. Both open ready to print, on A4 or US Letter.
What it covers
IB Biology at SL, with HL cards when you switch the level: B4.2 Ecological niches.
The running order
nine rounds and a handout of riddles. Review rounds are drawn from this topic each time you open the quiz, so two classes never get the same paper, and every review round can be redrawn in a click.

A taste of the questions
Think it through
Scenarios, odd ones out and true or false and why, from IB Biology.
- Clostridium botulinum can grow in a badly sealed can of food but not on food left open to the air. What kind of organism is it?
- Yeast makes bread dough rise whether or not oxygen is present. Is it an obligate aerobe, an obligate anaerobe or a facultative anaerobe?
- A pond has no plants at all, yet its oxygen level rises on sunny days. What could be producing the oxygen?
- A python swallows an antelope whole. Put these in order: absorption, assimilation, digestion, ingestion.
- In sunlight I make my own food; in the dark I soak it up from the pond. I'm Euglena. What kind of feeder am I?
- Mushroom, earthworm, lion, python: which is the odd one out, and why?
Answers
- An obligate anaerobe (it cannot tolerate oxygen)
- A facultative anaerobe (it can respire with or without oxygen)
- Algae or photosynthetic bacteria such as cyanobacteria
- Ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation (holozoic nutrition)
- A mixotroph, and a facultative one (I switch mode with conditions)
- The mushroom (saprotrophic: it digests food outside its body; the others ingest and digest inside)
Riddle me this
Course terms as riddles. Teams write what it is.
- I'm not where you live but what you do there: what you eat, what eats you and what you can put up with. What am I?
- Oxygen poisons me, so I thrive in sealed cans and deep wounds. What am I?
- I swallow food, digest it inside, absorb it and build it into myself, the way every animal feeds. What am I?
- In daylight I make my own food; in the dark I catch it or absorb it. What am I?
- I digest my dinner outside my body, pouring enzymes onto dead things and soaking up the soup. What am I?
Answers
- Ecological niche
- Obligate anaerobe

How it runs
- Open it in the builder. The running order loads ready to go. Swap, add or drop rounds, or draw a round's questions again.
- Present it or print it. Present puts each round on the projector in 16:9 with quizmaster notes. Print gives the script, team answer sheets, a picture sheet and a tally sheet on A4 or US Letter, with no projector needed.
- Score it. Teams swap sheets, mark, and each plays one joker to double a round. The scores page reveals the leaderboard from last place up.
