AP Biology Unit 2 Pub Quiz: Cell Structure and Function

Unit 2 as a pub quiz for your class: review rounds on this unit, mixed with pure-fun rounds so it feels like a night out and not another test.

Teacher pages are the quizmaster script and tally sheet. Student pages are the team answer sheet, handout and picture sheet. Both open ready to print, on A4 or US Letter.

What it covers

AP Biology : Unit 2: Cell Structure and Function.

The running order

nine rounds and a handout of riddles. Review rounds are drawn from this topic each time you open the quiz, so two classes never get the same paper, and every review round can be redrawn in a click.

  1. Riddle me this review
Course terms as riddles: "I have a head that loves water and two tails that hate it…" Teams write what it is.
  2. Close-up fun
A tiny zoomed-in patch. What's the full picture?
  3. Fact or fiction fun
Myths and true-but-weird facts. Teams write Fact or Fiction.
  4. Think it through review
Scenarios, odd ones out, true or false and why, puzzles: questions to reason through. Give teams a little longer.
  5. Films in science-speak fun
A film plot, described like a research abstract. Name the film.
  6. Who am I? Scientists fun
Three clues, hardest first. 3 points after clue 1, 2 after clue 2, 1 after clue 3.
  7. Missing vowels: course terms review
Your key terms with the vowels taken out.
  8. Funny animal noises fun
YouTube clips of animals making ridiculous noises. Screen off, listen, guess, then watch the reveal.
  9. Closest wins fun
Estimation questions. Nearest team wins the point. Doubles as the tiebreaker.

A taste of the questions

Think it through

Scenarios, odd ones out and true or false and why, from AP Biology.

  1. Proteins reach me unfinished. I trim them, add sugar tags and shipping labels, then send each one off in a vesicle to the right address. What am I?
  2. Cells in your pancreas make insulin to release into the blood. Trace the route an insulin molecule takes from where it's made to outside the cell.
  3. Two soap bubbles touch and become one. A vesicle and the plasma membrane can do the same, because both are made of me. What am I?
  4. A white blood cell swallows a bacterium whole. Which organelle then fuses with the package and digests the bacterium?
  5. True or false, and why? On a very hot day, cholesterol makes an animal cell's membrane more fluid.
  6. What would happen to a cell if its plasma membrane suddenly became far more fluid, almost runny?
Answers
  1. The Golgi apparatus (it modifies, tags and packages proteins)
  2. Rough ER β†’ Golgi β†’ vesicle β†’ plasma membrane (released by exocytosis)
  3. A fluid phospholipid bilayer (the same in both, so they merge)
  4. A lysosome (its hydrolytic enzymes break the bacterium down)
  5. False (in the heat it reduces fluidity, restraining the phospholipids' movement)
  6. It would leak (it loses selective permeability, so it can't control what enters and leaves)

Riddle me this

Course terms as riddles. Teams write what it is.

  1. I keep the cell's DNA behind a double envelope, with pores to let messages in and out. What am I?
  2. I'm a maze of tubes with no ribosomes on me. I make lipids and help your liver break down drugs. What am I?
  3. I'm a bean-shaped power plant with my own loop of DNA. Fold my inner membrane and I make more ATP. What am I?
  4. I'm green inside, with stacks of discs like piles of coins, and I catch sunlight to build sugar. What am I?
  5. I'm a big water sac in a plant cell. Fill me up and the plant stands tall; empty me and it wilts. What am I?
Answers
  1. Nucleus
  2. Smooth ER
  3. Mitochondrion
  4. Chloroplast
  5. Central vacuole

Quickfire

Short recall from the same topics.

  1. rRNA and protein, found in all life
  2. Ribosome-studded membrane network
  3. Makes lipids and detoxifies, no ribosomes
Answers
  1. Ribosome
  2. Rough ER
  3. Smooth ER

How it runs

  1. Open it in the builder. The running order loads ready to go. Swap, add or drop rounds, or draw a round's questions again.
  2. Present it or print it. Present puts each round on the projector in 16:9 with quizmaster notes. Print gives the script, team answer sheets, a picture sheet and a tally sheet on A4 or US Letter, with no projector needed.
  3. Score it. Teams swap sheets, mark, and each plays one joker to double a round. The scores page reveals the leaderboard from last place up.
