AP Biology Unit 5 Pub Quiz: Heredity

Unit 5 as a pub quiz for your class: review rounds on this unit, mixed with pure-fun rounds so it feels like a night out and not another test.

Teacher pages are the quizmaster script and tally sheet. Student pages are the team answer sheet, handout and picture sheet. Both open ready to print, on A4 or US Letter.

What it covers

AP Biology : Unit 5: Heredity.

The running order

nine rounds and a handout of riddles. Review rounds are drawn from this topic each time you open the quiz, so two classes never get the same paper, and every review round can be redrawn in a click.

  1. Riddle me this review
Course terms as riddles: "I have a head that loves water and two tails that hate it…" Teams write what it is.
  2. Close-up fun
A tiny zoomed-in patch. What's the full picture?
  3. Fact or fiction fun
Myths and true-but-weird facts. Teams write Fact or Fiction.
  4. Think it through review
Scenarios, odd ones out, true or false and why, puzzles: questions to reason through. Give teams a little longer.
  5. Films in science-speak fun
A film plot, described like a research abstract. Name the film.
  6. Who am I? Scientists fun
Three clues, hardest first. 3 points after clue 1, 2 after clue 2, 1 after clue 3.
  7. Missing vowels: course terms review
Your key terms with the vowels taken out.
  8. Funny animal noises fun
YouTube clips of animals making ridiculous noises. Screen off, listen, guess, then watch the reveal.
  9. Closest wins fun
Estimation questions. Nearest team wins the point. Doubles as the tiebreaker.

A taste of the questions

Think it through

Scenarios, odd ones out and true or false and why, from AP Biology.

  1. Mendel crosses two pea plants that are both heterozygous for purple flowers (Pp × Pp). Of 400 seedlings, about how many would you expect to have white flowers?
  2. Odd one out: Aa × aa, AA × aa, AA × AA, aa × aa. Which cross, and why?
  3. I'm a ratio of four numbers that add up to 16. Cross two double heterozygotes, AaBb × AaBb, and out I come. What am I?
  4. What phenotype ratio would you expect if you crossed a round yellow pea plant, RrYy, with a wrinkled green one, rryy?
  5. I can hide in carriers for a generation or two, then turn up in a grandchild whose parents never showed me. What kind of trait am I?
  6. I'm the reason two genes refuse to sort independently: they sit side by side on one chromosome and travel into gametes together. What am I?
Answers
  1. About 100 (a 3:1 ratio: ¼ of the offspring are pp)
  2. Aa × aa (the only one giving two phenotypes, in a 1:1 ratio; the rest give one)
  3. 9:3:3:1 (9 both dominant : 3 : 3 : 1 both recessive)
  4. 1:1:1:1 (each of the four gamete types from RrYy is equally likely)
  5. Recessive (carriers pass it on without showing it)
  6. Linkage (linked genes are close together on the same chromosome)

Riddle me this

Course terms as riddles. Teams write what it is.

  1. I'm one version of a gene: a pea plant might carry my purple-flower form or my white-flower form. What am I?
  2. I'm one of a matched pair, one from Mom and one from Dad, with the same genes in the same order but maybe different versions. What am I?
  3. In prophase I, I swap chunks between partner chromosomes, so the ones you pass on are patchworks of your parents'. What am I?
  4. I carry one set of chromosomes instead of two, like a sperm or an egg. What am I?
  5. I'm what you can see or measure, the red petals or the curly hair, not the letters hiding behind them. What am I?
Answers
  1. Allele
  2. Homologous chromosome
  3. Crossing over
  4. Haploid
  5. Phenotype

Quickfire

Short recall from the same topics.

  1. Division making four haploid gametes
  2. Having one set of chromosomes (n)
  3. Having two sets of chromosomes (2n)
Answers
  1. Meiosis
  2. Haploid
  3. Diploid

How it runs

  1. Open it in the builder. The running order loads ready to go. Swap, add or drop rounds, or draw a round's questions again.
  2. Present it or print it. Present puts each round on the projector in 16:9 with quizmaster notes. Print gives the script, team answer sheets, a picture sheet and a tally sheet on A4 or US Letter, with no projector needed.
  3. Score it. Teams swap sheets, mark, and each plays one joker to double a round. The scores page reveals the leaderboard from last place up.
