Properties of Substances and Mixtures escape room
The Perfume Distillery Lockdown
A late shift at an old perfume distillery has gone wrong: a gas alarm tripped, and the building sealed every door with your team still inside. The safety system will only release the locks for chemists who can explain why some liquids boil away at a breath of warmth while others cling to their flasks. Five locks stand between you and the loading dock. Each lock sets four questions, and your answers decode into its combination. Hurry: the ventilation is off, the stills are still warm, and the vapor in the air is building by the minute.

The five locks
Each lock’s four answers are decoded with its puzzle into a four-digit combination, so one wrong answer keeps it shut. The questions climb from recall to evaluating evidence.- Lock 1 · Recall
Bottling Hall Door
Pathway Easy
Start at your letter and go straight down. Every time you meet a rung, cross it. Your digit is where you finish.
- Lock 2 · Understand
Essence Cellar
Petri dishes Easy
Each letter is a petri dish. Count the colonies growing in it.
- Lock 3 · Apply
Gas Cylinder Store
Overlay Medium
Only segments lit on BOTH panels count. Read the number they make.
- Lock 4 · Analyse data
Quality Control Lab
Light panel Medium
Add up the numbers above the shaded squares. Careful: every row puts them in a different order.
- Lock 5 · Evaluate
Master Still Hatch
Magic square Hard
Every row, column and diagonal adds up to the same total, but you have to work out what it is first. One square is blank.
Lock 1, as a team sees it
The first four questions and their decoder. The answers, and the reason for each, are in the teacher pack.Which type of intermolecular force acts between the particles of every molecular substance, polar or nonpolar?
- A Dipole-dipole forces
- B Hydrogen bonds
- C London dispersion forces
- D Ion-dipole forces
A solid has a high melting point and is brittle. It does not conduct electricity as a solid but does when melted. What type of solid is it most likely to be?
- A Ionic solid
- B Metallic solid
- C Molecular solid
- D Covalent network solid
Absorbing photons from which region of the electromagnetic spectrum causes transitions between the vibrational energy levels of a molecule?
- A Microwave
- B Ultraviolet
- C Visible
- D Infrared
Which description fits the particles in a sample of a liquid?
- A Far apart, moving fast in straight lines between collisions
- B Close together and touching, able to slide past one another
- C Close together and touching, held in fixed spots and vibrating
- D Far apart, but held in fixed spots by strong attractions

Running it
- Online: send teams the play link. They answer a lock’s four questions, decode the letters and enter the combination; after lock 5 they get a completion code to show you. Nobody needs an account.
- On paper: sign in (free) and print the teacher pack: question cards, the five decoders, a guide and the answer key with a reason for every answer.
- Your version: Edit a copy from the library to change any question, then play and print it by its own code, or build a room from the topics your class has covered.
