1.5 Lipids: revision map

The subtopic in the middle and four tasks round it: label two diagrams, complete a table and fill 14 gaps. Every box rests on a learning objective of the topic in the AP Biology course and exam description. Type into the blanks and check them, or print it on A4, Letter or A3 with an answer key.

1.5.ATypes of lipid

LipidBuilt fromMain job
glycerol and three fatty acidslong-term energy storage and insulation
glycerol, two fatty acids and a phosphate groupforms the cell membrane bilayer
four fused carbon ringshormones such as estrogen; cholesterol in animal membranes

What they share is that they are mostly , so they are not soluble in water. They are not polymers.

1.5.ASaturation sets the structure

A saturated fatty acid has no carbon-carbon double bonds, so its tail is straight and the molecules pack tightly: fats of this kind, such as animal fat, are at room temperature. An fatty acid has one or more double bonds, each bending the tail, so molecules cannot pack as closely and plant oils are liquid. In a membrane, kinked tails keep the bilayer . A phospholipid is amphipathic: its polar head meets water and its nonpolar tails face each other.

A saturated fatty acid has no carbon-carbon double bonds, so its tail is straight and the molecules pack tightly: fats of this kind, such as animal fat, are solid at room temperature. An unsaturated fatty acid has one or more double bonds, each bending the tail, so molecules cannot pack as closely and plant oils are liquid. In a membrane, kinked tails keep the bilayer fluid. A phospholipid is amphipathic: its polar head meets water and its nonpolar tails face each other.
