7.12 Origins of Life on Earth: revision map

The subtopic in the middle and four tasks round it: label a diagram, complete a table, put a process in order and fill 8 gaps. Every box rests on a learning objective of the topic in the AP Biology course and exam description. Type into the blanks and check them, or print it on A4, Letter or A3 with an answer key.

7.12.AFrom chemistry to cells

Number the steps in order.

  1. Simple organic molecules formed from non-living chemistry.
  2. Membrane-bound protocells enclosed RNA and its chemistry.
  3. Monomers assembled into polymers such as RNA.
  4. Cells with DNA, RNA and proteins evolved, and natural selection began to act on them.
  5. Self-replicating RNA molecules began to copy themselves and catalyze reactions.

7.12.AStages in one model

StageWhat happened
synthesissmall organic molecules formed from gases and energy, as in the Miller-Urey experiment
Polymerizationmonomers joined into polymers, perhaps on clay or hot rock surfaces
lipid-like molecules formed vesicles that enclosed chemistry and kept it separate
RNA worldRNA that could copy itself and catalyze reactions (ribozymes) came before DNA and protein

7.12.AThe early earth

The early earth had little free oxygen, plenty of water, volcanic gases and strong lightning and ultraviolet light. Miller and Urey passed sparks through a mixture of gases resembling this atmosphere, above heated water, and within days found among the products. This showed that the building blocks of life can form without living things, though it does not show how the first cells formed.
