4.5 Cell Cycle: revision map

The subtopic in the middle and five tasks round it: label two diagrams, complete a table, put a process in order and fill 11 gaps. Every box rests on a learning objective of the topic in the AP Biology course and exam description. Type into the blanks and check them, or print it on A4, Letter or A3 with an answer key.

4.5.A, 4.5.BCounting DNA

Before S phase a cell has one copy of each chromosome. After S phase it has as much DNA, but the chromosome number is the same, because the copies stay attached as sister chromatids. At anaphase the chromatids separate, and each new cell receives one full set, so daughter cells are genetically identical to the parent. Mitosis is used for growth, repair and, in many organisms, asexual reproduction.

4.5.APhases

PhaseWhat happens
G1the cell grows and carries out its normal functions
DNA is replicated, so each chromosome has two sister chromatids
G2the cell grows more and prepares to divide; checks the copied DNA
the nucleus divides, then the cytoplasm in cytokinesis, to give two identical cells

4.5.BMitosis in order

Number the steps in order.

  1. Metaphase: chromosomes line up along the center of the cell.
  2. Telophase: nuclei re-form round each set of chromosomes.
  3. Cytokinesis: the cytoplasm divides.
  4. Anaphase: sister chromatids are pulled to opposite poles.
  5. Prophase: chromosomes condense and the spindle starts to form.

  5. GapsCounting DNA

Before S phase a cell has one copy of each chromosome. After S phase it has twice as much DNA, but the chromosome number is the same, because the copies stay attached as sister chromatids. At anaphase the chromatids separate, and each new cell receives one full set, so daughter cells are genetically identical to the parent. Mitosis is used for growth, repair and, in many organisms, asexual reproduction.
