3.4 Photosynthesis: revision map

The subtopic in the middle and five tasks round it: label two diagrams, complete a table, put a process in order and fill 15 gaps. Every box rests on a learning objective of the topic in the AP Biology course and exam description. Type into the blanks and check them, or print it on A4, Letter or A3 with an answer key.

3.4.ACapturing light

Chlorophyll absorbs mostly red and blue light and reflects light, so leaves look green. Absorbed energy excites electrons in photosystem II. They pass along an electron transport chain, and the energy released pumps protons into the thylakoid space. Protons flow back through ATP synthase, which makes ATP by . Water is split to replace the electrons, releasing oxygen. The overall change: carbon dioxide and water become glucose and oxygen, with light as the energy source.

3.4.BThe Calvin cycle

Number the steps in order.

  1. Some G3P leaves the cycle to be made into glucose and other organic molecules.
  2. The six-carbon product splits into two three-carbon molecules.
  3. The rest is used, with more ATP, to regenerate RuBP.
  4. ATP and NADPH reduce these to G3P.
  5. Rubisco attaches CO₂ to RuBP, a five-carbon sugar: carbon fixation.

Chlorophyll absorbs mostly red and blue light and reflects green light, so leaves look green. Absorbed energy excites electrons in photosystem II. They pass along an electron transport chain, and the energy released pumps protons into the thylakoid space. Protons flow back through ATP synthase, which makes ATP by chemiosmosis. Water is split to replace the electrons, releasing oxygen. The overall change: carbon dioxide and water become glucose and oxygen, with light as the energy source.
